DCmum, again, I hope someone now living there will chime in (Tone, the moderator, knows a lot about Alexandria), but when I lived near Eisenhower many years ago, the main commuting problem when driving was getting through Old Town, with the traffic and stoplights. I was driving to a different part of DC than you will be, but eventually moved because it took so long to get to work if I had to go during rush hour.

Arlington off of Columbia Pike might be a good bet. The 16 Metrobus line is the most reliable in the fleet and they're putting in the streetcar soon.

How friendly is that area for young single mums and toddlers ( age 3). I always thought it was more geared towards single professionals without kids, but I could be wrong Thank you!

I think you should consider living in Vienna or around Tysons Corner. You should be closer to any stations from Vienna through East Falls Church. These are family friendly areas with lots of kids activities, more choices for pre-school and most importantly I consider these areas to be safe. Your commute to DC my Metro should be reasonable and you should be able pickup your DD before 6:30 (most day cares or after school care closes around that time).

I thought Vienna would be a bit too far to commute to Judiciary Square and be back on time to pick up my daughter, no?

I think Tyson's will be out of her budget and most of Vienna too. I did a quick search of Alexandria, Arlington, Tyson's and Vienna on homesdatabase.com. Here are the results:

If you see any you are interested in I would call or google and figure out proximity to your new job. Good Luck! You can also find daycares on the county website of your choice.

I checked Metro - Home page for Vienna to Judiciary Sq. and transit time is 39 minutes. Your commute will be approx 60 minutes assuming you are not living too far from the Metro. I used to rent a condo in Falls Church near George C. Marshall high school and I paid $1700 for 2 bedroom. They have a shuttle to the West Falls Church Metro (5 mins). They are called Renaissance Condos and address starts with 2230 George C. Marshall Dr. A lot of condos are generally on rent there. Also, there are multiple apartment options on Route 7 close to West Falls Church Metro. You will be 2 lights away from Tysons Corner mall. Over all, I think this area is a good fit for you.

My only concern for a commute of an hour is daycare. If my daycare is in Vienna and I start work at 7h30am, it means I have to drop my child before 6h30 am which is way too early and too close in case I am late or something happens, it is cutting it close a little bit. My ideal commute would be 30-40minutes top from door to door otherwise it is cutting it too close for comfort due to my daycare needs. My other option I guess would be to get a daycare in the district close to my job but then I'd rather drive to work than hussle my daughter in a bus+metro daily and with that option I'd also have to figure out the parking options in DC
