After spending 5 years in beautiful Kent Island, we are returning to Ashburn, VA...

Even though commute from Kent island to Alexandria, VA (Where I work) was nearly double the distance from Ashburn to Alexandria, commute time was about the same (55 min to hour).

So... my question is... has commute from Ashburn to Alexandria gotten worse/better/about the same since 2008 ...?

And.... *shudders* how much is the toll on 267 now?

Why the move?

Traffic's gotten worse in some areas, better in others.

Why would you go back to Ashburn? Why not find an area closer to Alexandria?

In any case, if you are willing to pay the money, you now have the option of using the express lanes on the beltway. So it would be about $2.75 to use the Dulles Toll road, plus about $2 to use the express lane all the way to the Springfield interchange. Doubling up each day makes that an expensive commute.

Well.. what else but economy...

Looking to use Route 7, then get on 495 S and bypass 267 completely since toll appeared to have jumped significantly since I was last here in VA.

Is that ... doable at around 8 AM or so... ?

Believe me, I'm not looking forward to it...

Move is a forced one, made necessary due to economy.
We had converted our home in Ashburn into rental, and moved into our dream home in beautiful Kent Island... but alas... had to sell that home, and move back into our ashburn home

I work in Herndon and live in Ashburn, about 8 miles, and it took me over an hour to get home yesterday, so no traffic is not better

Why would traffic be better from Ashburn? LOL

RT 7 is still a parking lot after 7:30.

If you leave early enough (by 6:30am) you should be okay. Traffic sucks on Waxpool- much, much worse than 5 years ago. It can take 35 minutes to get to the toll road some days.

If you are skipping the toll road, your commute will likely be about 2 hours to alexandria.

You might want to consider using an express bus instead. Either way, your commute is going to cost about 10-15 bucks per day unless you want to wake up at 5am... you should probably come to grips with that.

Using Loudoun express bus to Tysons takes about 30 minutes, and then its 30 minutes using the new FFX Connector buses to Alexandria. There is little chance that this will line up perfectly, but I think the 495Express buses are on 15 or 30 minute headways, and you will likely spend less than tolls and save money on gas.
