You have just won the lottery and you have won a $5 Million Dollar home on 5 acres in a semi rural area of Fairfax County. Which of the following communities would you want the home in the woods to be in: Clifton, Oakton or Great Falls? (It has to be in one of those communities)

Would you want to live in a semi rural area next to big lot homes and woods in a town like that?

For this philosophical question you HAVE TO live there and can't sell or rent out the home.

clifton. (I really wouldnt want that lifestyle, but of the three choices, Clifton is so much my fave, I figured its the right answer)

I can't just retire and move to Hawaii where I could train dogs and learn to surf? Bummer.

I think maybe Oakton, for proximity to stuff. I like the idea of 5 acres, but I don't want to forfeit getting to target in 5 minutes.

I picked Great Falls. While I would prefer to live in a more close knit type neighborhood since I have small kids, I picked Great Falls because my wife and I love going into DC, so it's closer than Clifton, and driving the Parkway is much prettier than driving 66 like I'd have to do from Oakton. I also like the small town shops in Great Falls, and having the National Park nearby is a plus. Plus it's zoned to very good schools...kids and all. Probably the best choice for me, though I'd much prefer a McLean, Arlington or Vienna type location.

I moved into the country and my closest "big box" store is 35 minutes away (Home Depot is 20). I've found that I no longer need to go to these stores. I haven't stepped foot in a Target, WalMart of K-Mart in over a year; and I'm not going to renew my Costco membership.

They are building more shopping plazas in the South Riding and Aldie areas and more "big box" retail is coming. Knowing now that I don't need it, I find it will be a burden, rather than a benefit.

(as for the poll, I would pick Great Falls. Lovely area.....wish I could afford it.)

Oh, I don't *need* it. I order 90% of my "stuff" off amazon these days, but walking through target when I'm stressed is cheap therapy for me. Treasure hunting for hidden post-holiday sales or combing the dollar aisle for stuff for my classroom is one of the small joys that I look forward to

I grew up in a town that has refused to allow target/walmart/etc. I went 20 years without it, you can't take it away from me now!

5 million dollars? Great Falls is like country--one needs to drive miles in order to be able to do an after-dinner walk. I would definitely choose the nicer areas of Mclean or North Arlington.

The best location would be a quiet and nice area that's within walking distance to metro station, retail, etc.

It was a toss up between Great Falls and Clifton , for re-sale value it would have to be Great Falls but for living purposes I would choose Clifton, just more relaxing out in the country.

But for my wife and kids, I'd be living in Clifton or Aldie, probably with about 20-25 acres. Sadly, neither Fairfax nor Loudoun allow shooting even on private property any longer.

I love Clifton but I think I'd have to go with Great Falls. I'm a huge Wolf Trap fan and to be closer to just that alone would be worth it. So - I'd actually probably rather be in Mclean but since that's not an option...Great Falls it is.
