As to the "number 55" comment - it was Fairfax County Police I believe (not sure if Annandale has their own? probably not) - they didn't ask for clarification of WHERE the areas were (I would assume it's Mason District that handles their area?), they were obviously upset - it's not on a main drag, you go back in through a residential area (Broyhill or Broycrest or something), neighbors all know each other, houses are very well-maintained...
Broyhill Crest? Really? I live there. Well, adjacent to there. That's completely bizarre, this is such a safe area!

(And yes, it's older housing stock, mostly brick ranchers, and many don't have garages. Lots with carports, but I don't see as many garages.)

I just bought a townhouse in Annandale that has a two-car garage. I was shocked at the LACK of garages on the homes in most of the neighborhoods. You would think that sometime in the last 30 years the owners would have thought to build one especially with the INCREASING crime rates in the county.

I'm surprised at this too - if we ever end up moving to a SFH w/o a garage, that will be 1A on my list of things to do.

I have neither a garage nor a crime problem.

I can't tell if you're serious or if I fell into the sarchasm. If the former, all I can say is that y'all have a weird idea of crime and safety. I don't have a garage and until this post about the tires, haven't ever heard of a problem with car break-ins or vandalism around here. I guess I can imagine people wanting them for the convenience, keeping the car clear of snow and pollen and the like, but building one solely because of fear of crime in such a generally safe area is kind of bizarre to me. Reading some of these threads (I initially thought the one asking if Falls Church was dangerous was going to be a humor post) makes me think some people in NoVA are scared of their own shadow. Or, as someone put it on the FC thread, afraid of anyone who makes less than the median income in Fairfax County.

I agree with this post. I liked having a garage when I lived at my mom's house in Kentucky, not because of crime (who is going to mess with a beat up 01 Honda in rural "Guntucky"?), but because I could get into my car and not worry about having to scrape ice off my car or I didn't have to go right into snow.

Honestly, worrying about having my car's tires stolen living in South Arlington off the Pike (yes I drive a newer Honda Accord with alloy wheels) is a nicer problem compared to my co-worker who lives in Landover (who drives the same car I do) who has to worry about having the whole car stolen.

Apparently, the thieve(s) are after alloy rims - they had the nerve to take blocks from my friends' landscaping to put under one side of the car, used their own jack (the thieves) on the other side as well as more blocks.

They also were told by the police that locking lug nuts are basically worthless - thieves have the keys.
What kind of Honda was it? Hondas are usually thief magnets (accord or civic) because parts are interchangeable and are worth some money. I asked a MoCo, MD cop about the most stolen cars here and Hondas and Acuras topped the list for them but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be much different in FFX.

I agree with both of these posts.

I live in Annandale (evidently the "super scary creepy part where all the crime happens" ) and we have a carport but we also have three vehicles at our house. When my vehicle is in the carport I don't have to worry about scraping the ice off the windshield which is great when my kids are running late and might not make it to school on time.

We have lived at our house for 12 years and have never had a crime issue. I have called the non-emergency number for the police twice, though -- once to let them know about a loud party, and another to let them know about a fox that ran through the backyards of our cul-de-sac.

I see our neighborhood fox once every week or two.

What kind of car do you drive? I don't want to subject my BMW's to the elements.
