Tired of salmon and tilapia. A lot of groceries stores are so overpriced and not fresh.

Simple Question - Where can I get some fresh fish around here?

"here" covers a fairly large area, however just about any Asian grocery will have fish that's plenty fresh - down near the Beltway check out Great Wall (Gallows Road near 50); we love going there even though we're out in Centreville - note, though, we're totally used to Asian grocery stores so do NOT think "ewwww" due to odor or anything else, some more gentrified (or fake gentrified) folks might think "Ewww"....

Out near us is Lotte - plenty of fresh fish. Though not techinically FRESH, we're planning on calimari tonight made from instant-frozen-right-after-caught-ON-the-boat squid bought at Lotte.

There are a couple of H-Marts sprinkled around NOVA and they sell a pretty wide assortment of fish including live ones, octopus, think I even saw a sea cucumber, etc. The scent of fish is very strong even when you walk in the front door. I used to go there to get sashimi grade fish.

You know, for all the years I've lived here I've never been to the Maine Ave. Fish Market. Might be a fun excursion for this week. Is it easy to park nearby, and if we need to walk a few blocks is it a safe area to park?

Whenever I've gone there it's been easy to park WHEN there is a parking space available. Since the market isn't really a tourist spot anyone who comes in and parks leaves pretty fast, too - as such, if there are NO spots to park in you can typically wait a minute or two and there will be one available.

I've never parked anywhere else.

Here's an overhead view: Fish Market Environ

Yeah, it's safe. There is metered street parking along Maine Ave. and Water St. as well. The Southwest Waterfront is totally building up now, with Arena Stage, new restaurants, etc.

I go to Global Foods. Be prepared for the smell though, because it can indeed be quite strong.

Maine Avenue is a kind of phony throwback to the days of old....fishermen selling their catch off their boat at the wharf. Only trouble is, those are not boats, they are unpowered barges that never move. Their "catch" is flown or trucked in from all over, same as the supermarkets. No fresher and certainly more expensive.

The one cool part of it is the barges have a back door to serve the pleasure boat trade....I've called them on the radio and my steamed shrimp were ready when we arrived, no need to even tie up....just maneuver close enough to complete the transaction and go...
