I bought my car new back in july 2011 and now its coming to expire at the end of july. I thought I would get a letter from the county telling me to go take the emissions and then i'll get to renew for another two years.

should I call them, go get my emissions/inspection done before the end of the month? I thought new cars 2-3 years don't need to take it?

anyways I forget about new cars on how this works. any help is appreciated

A new vehicle is exempt from the emissions (but not the safety) inspection for two years...so you'll need to get the emissions test before you can renew the plates this year.

Normally, the State DMV (not the county) does send a renewal notice. Is your address on your drivers license correct? If your plates run out July 31, and you would rather not go to DMV, I would get the emissions test ASAP so you have time to get the stickers back by mail before the end of the month. There is no grace period.

You can renew on line: Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles

(the info you need to renew on line (title #, etc) is on your current registration.)

One of our cars also expires at the end of July and we got the notice in the mail probably 6-8 weeks ago, so I would look into this.

If time is tight I believe you can go do the emissions, then pay for the registration online and print out a receipt that you can keep in the car until stickers come. Someone correct me if I am wrong!
