O'k...so FINALLY the big tree and stump is removed. Is it too "late" this year for me to put down soil and seed for grass? Or do I need to wait until spring?

Thanks!

You can always put in dirt - seeding depends pretty much strictly on freezing - and THAT is (or, last time I checked, was) predicted to happen Friday night here in NoVA: Sully Station Forecast

[I "just" seeded a couple areas in my lawn about 14 days ago - the seedlings are now an inch high, probably another by Friday - and there they will sit til spring...]

I would replace it with soil and then get sod when winter is over with to cover the spot. It is too late to seed the yard. You will end up having to do it again when things warm up.

Unless you have an usual grass like zoysia, there is a product at nurseries called Patch Master or something like that. It has seed, fertilizer and mulch all combined. You spread it and water it. Very easy for small areas. Just put newspaper or burlap over it at night to protect against frost and it should be fine. This stuff works in about 7-10 days if you keep it moist. The weather's not that cold yet and the ground is not frozen so it should be fine.

I think the Patchmaster sounds worth a try for a small area. It wouldn't cost much and if it doesn't work, you can redo it in the spring.
