Hello, would it be very difficult to commute to Tenleytown from Sterling, VA via bus/metro? Looking for inexpensive areas commutable to Tenleytown and something came up in Sterling. Thanks.

That's going to be a long commute. I can't speak for public transportation, but it would be a bear of a drive. I know nothing about the buses around here, but you'd have to get all the way to Vienna Metro (at least until the new Reston Metro station is completed).

Also, not sure what your housing requirements may be, but if you found something inexpensive in Sterling, it may be a in less-than-desirable neighborhood and/or be in a poorly rated school district. Just something to be aware of.

If you don't live in the DC area yet, I would look in Maryland if I were working in Tenleytown.

I agree. There's a lot to be said for not having to cross the Potomac River.

I see. LIke living in NJ and crossing the Hudson every day to work in Manhattan--a horrible experience. Does anyone know anything about Springfield, VA? It seems a little closer, or maybe it's the same idea. Thanks.

From Sterling, you could take the Loudoun commuter bus to West Falls Church Metro, but that's Orange Line so you'd have to switch to a Red Line train at Metro Center. I think altogether that would be a really tedious (and expensive) commute.

Driving from Sterling to Tenleytown is a miserable commute. I did it for 2.5 years and I was so miserable we moved. The average time is about 50 minutes, but it's mostly stop and go traffic. Dreadful.

Unfortunately, I think Springfield will be a worse commute.

Of those who work with me in Tenleytown, most live in MD, and the others live in DC. While I'm sure there are others (like me) from VA, I don't personally know any of them.

Isn't there are metro in Springfield? Why would that be worse?

Well, according to the TripPlanner on the Metro website you'll be on the Metro for an hour (from Springfield to Tenleytown). So this is an hour, plus the time it takes you to get from your house to the Springfield station and from the Tenleytown station to your work. This, plus more than $10 in Metro fares every day.

Not sure about you, but I would consider that worse.
