I've finally found an apartment! The landlord does do credit checks, and mine is, lets just say it's not the greatest because of my student loan which I have been making payments on.

I know that paying a larger deposit up front helps, but are there any other tips that may help me get my first apartment?

You may want to write the landlord a letter stating what a bonafide renter you would be. You could include being responsible, mature, independent, clean, timely, community-oriented, quiet, etc. -- basically, all the things that would make a landlord comfortable to rent to you.

My daughter did this with her first apartment. She was fresh out of school and did not have a long work history or strong credit record. So she wrote him a letter and attached it with the rent application and outlined her current and previous employers and good work history, places she lived as a student, being a good student, personal and professional references, etc. She did get the apartment. Good luck!

SHow them a bank statement and/or pay stub. Student loans are one thing; delinquent or late payments are another. I check my Transunion for free at www.creditkarma.com.
