I'm surprised nobody brought up the option of renting out a condo from a private landlord. Without the overhead of a management company you can get a comparable condo for significantly cheaper. For example, check out Palazzo at Park Center. It's a quiet garden style condo complex across King Street from Fairlington, only a fifteen minute walk from Mark Center. There's a bus directly to Mark Center, a nice gym, a walking trail, and a pool. One bedrooms rent in the $1400-$1500 range.

Check out Zillow rentals and Craigslist. There's one available for $1400 right now: GREAT LOCATION at King St. & I-395. DC/Pentagon/Shops/Shirlington

I live here at Town Square at Mark Center. I have lived in the garden apartments and now in a 3 Level Town Home within then complex. We have been here 5 years. Any questions? Illusions Thai, 24 Hour CVS, Starbucks, DQ, Subway, Mc Donald's, Noodles and Co, Salon, Dry Cleaners, and SunTrust Bank is across the street and we will have a grocery store back once Global Food opens soon.

You could live here without a car as the 7A-F Metro bus goes to the Pentagon Metro every 20 mins and Dash Bus runs to King Street Metro. Only thing I don't like about equity management at this complex is rent does go up every year and they need updated. But over all I like the area as we have stayed. Currently paying almost $2600 a month but I need the 2 car garage and driveway.

When I take Beauregard as a cut-through during the mid-day, I frequently see office workers walking down to the small shopping center (there's a CVS, dry cleaners, ban, Subway sandwich shop, McDonald's, DQ, an Asian restaurant of some type -- Thai? can't recall... -- and a Noodles & Company, so on a nice day, it's a nice walk. There's also a nicer sit-down restaurant a block or 2 away from the shopping center.

And when I was living at Millbrook, there was a little shuttle bus operated by the complex that ferried people to a Metro station in the mornings and did pickups around typical quitting times. If you call for info, be sure to ask about that.
Man, I'm glad the Noodles & Company wasn't open when I was working over there (2008-2010). I would have gotten fat! Yep, there is a Thai place there. The restaurant down the street is a Clyde's. I almost moved to one of those apartments but I decided I didn't want to live THAT close to work.

FYI, some of the older apartment complexes on Beauregard are going to be replaced sometime soon. WaPo article from 2012 here--I know the City Council vote it refers to ended up passing. Here's a more recent article.

Once upon a time, I lived in Tower 2000 right off of Beauregard. I want to say that was about 6-7 years ago now. At that time, the rents were relatively reasonable compared to other complexes nearby, but I do remember we got in during a "special," and someone who tried to rent a unit a year after us was quoted a much higher price, so not sure how the rates are nowadays. We had a 2br+den. I know they were also in the process of updating kitchens throughout the building when we left.

There's also Seminary Hill Apartments, at Van Dorn and Kenmore (just east of 395), and, south from there, Willow Run Apartments.

You didn't make up the name. Seminary Towers apartments are on the opposite side of 395 on Seminary Road. Southern Towers on the west side and Seminary Towers on the east side.

Ah! That explains why I saw that name in the WaPo article as well. Persnicketygal--you stand corroborated!

I still think these names are too vague for the properties in question. I would suggest:

Slatternly Mews
Squalor Plaza
Axilla Estates
Methadone Manor
