I'm a NOVA native, but I've lived in NC for about 20 years now. As we all know, things have changed up there A LOT!

I'm getting ready for another trip up to see the parentals in Sterling in May. I've been taking the same route for about 9 years now, and I'm curious if there's a better way to go.

If you were traveling north on I-95 with a destination near Sterling, what route would you take? Would your answer be different during rush hours?

Yes, and weekend/weekday as well as there is a lot of road construction between F'burg and I-495. What part of NC are you coming from?

I live south of Raleigh. If I were a little further west, I'd probably take 29 through the state, but it's a little too far out of the way. I-95 is most direct, and I really don't mind it much until just north of F'burg. That's the stretch I frequently refer to as Dante's parking lot.

I usually will do 95 to 123 to 286 to 66 to 28, but if traffic's wide open, I might just find it easier to take 95 to 495 to 267 to 28.

If for some reason 95 is absolutely terrible north of F-burg, then I'd spring for 17 up to 29 to 66 to 28.

If traffic is bad on 95 you can get off at 152 and take the Prince William Parkway to 66 to 28. If traffic is really bad, you can take exit 133 for 17 North and take that to 28.

I would definitely go one of these backways during rush hour.

That's actually similar to the route I currently take, though I just stay on 286 because my destination is off of Algonkian Pkwy.

I might have to give 17 a shot ... I don't think I've ever been on that road. Does it move fairly well?

This^^. In fact, I would take Rt. 17 up at Fredericksburg even if I95 isn't a hot mess from that point north.

Or Rt. 17 to Rt. 28 (they intersect in Bealeton), but Rt. 28 has a 45 mph speed limit which is tough to hold (poking along through a 2 lane country road). Mileage wise, I think it is slightly shorter but would be lengthier trip, time wise. Maybe 30 minutes or so longer but it's a pretty drive.

Concur as I-95 to 495 is good or useless, depending hours and accidents.
