Can anyone recommend a safe area within a 1 hour commute from Mt Vernon, VA to focus my rental search on? I took a job there and need a place to stay. $1,000 a month is my budget. Since i am not familiar with the area i could use some tips. 1BR or Studio is fine.

Thanks,
Dave

$1000 may be just a touch too low for any managed buildings or complexes close to Mount Vernon. There are low-rise apartment complexess on or near Route 1/Richmond Highway with 1BRs that might be at or slightly above your preferred budget. Of those, I would recommend Mt. Vernon Square before any others but some mild street wisdom may be useful in that neighborhood.

Note that a "1 hour commute" can mean as little as 5-10 miles in this area, especially if you are looking further south near on traffic-clogged I-95 or alternate Route 1.

I'd look somewhere in southern Maryland near Joint Base Andrews. You will have an approx 30-45 minute commute and be commuting against traffic so as to minimize that headache.

You might want to check out the Oxon Hill area of Maryland. However, if you can go just a little higher in the rent price you may be able to get a 1 bedroom off of Route 1.
