We live near Fair Oaks mall and my DH used to work out of an office in Lanham. He could drive it, basically from Fair Oaks to Lanham in about an hour IF he
left by 6:30 am . If he left much later all bets were off. Same could be said for the afternoon if he left around 4:00. Fair Oaks and 50 is directly opposite of Lanham and 50 on the east side so he also learned to circumvent the beltway. One direction was faster in the morning, the other in the afternoon. I forget which. Springfield will be much closer but you will be depended on the Wilson bridge both ways.

I would recommend Springfield. Fair Oaks Mall would only be about 20 mins from there, not to mention Tyson's Corner, Merrifield which has a lot of awesome restaurants, etc. Also, the Springfield Mall is currently under rennovation and has some nice tenants lined up for opening in October.
