My husband was appalled that I paid $32K for a car. He swears he will never pay over $20K. I believe him. But this is a guy who has a massive Scotch collection and has no problem spending over $500 for a meal for two.

To each his own....

I think I read that bills go out in August and payments are due in October, but I'm thinking I might be a year out because of when I bought it?

Very true. I will admit this was totally my fault not knowing about it, you'd just think they'd have to "remind" you. I feel like I read about this somewhere when I was moving down here, but I didn't have a car to transfer so I just ignored it. And when I bought this one, I mistakenly assumed it was like Maryland.

Fairfax County car tax is due October 5 every year. If you don't pay by then, they tack on a 5 (or maybe it's 10?) percent penalty. Ultimately, if you continue not to pay it, they can hold up your purchase of your State license plate renewal stickers.

One other thing, the car tax is pro-rated. Since this is May, they'll only tax you for the remaining months of 2014. They also use a "blue book" type reference guide to value the car....which should be considerably less than your purchase price.

Loudoun breaks it into two payments.....due May 5 and Oct 5. If I remember correctly, City of Alexandria did the same thing.

I think what really killed me is the fact that we currently don't drive *that* much. We both metro to work, but he's going to start driving half of the time so it made sense to get rid of his 2006 Mustang, which was having some issues, and get a car with better city gas mileage.

Thank you!

Will Fairfax County send me a bill once I register?

Also, do you know what their "year" is? September to August?

Yes once you register you should receive your bill in the mail in August I believe. I don't know how they measure their year. This website should be helpful as well: Car Tax*- Fairfax County, Virginia

I think they just assume people are aware of VA personal property taxes. They have nothing to do with it anyways, it's the counties that charge it. Like others said, VA said lower fees elsewhere so it all probably evens out. And the PPT bill will drop every year as your car depreciates. The tax deduction helps defray the cost too, if you're able to take that down the road.
