We're wondering what options we have in the Fairfax area for Summer Break for our middle schooler (8thgrade). My job now gives me summers off, but I won't be getting that there-for those that work full time, what do you do with your kids?

My kids go to summer camp. Others I know hire a sitter for the summer to take the kids to the pool and such.

In 8th grade I just stayed at home alone, watched mtv, invited friends over, walked around outside.

Yeah, eighth grade is more than old enough to be on your own, forming awesome memories with your friends

There are tons of summer sports camps - football/baseball/lacrosse/soccer.

The cheapest way is to have your child socialize with the neighborhoods kids. I spent almost every single day of middle school years outside with friends.

I was lamenting to my hair stylist yesterday about how I think kids just don't DO this anymore. He thinks that it is okay.

But as for OP's question, I see signs pop up everywhere for camps of all varieties come late spring-there is no shortage of that here.

OH my God, either a sophomore in college or serving time because he didn't have enough freedom as child during the summer.

It's still a relevant question - all of us struggle in summer. I do summer camps, but it's expensive and there are no refunds if you sign up for 6 weeks and your kid hates it.
