I need to be at Union Station by 8 am on a weekday morning. What is the best route, and the approximate time it will take? I will be driving (metro doesn't work for me, as I need my car on the return), but I will qualify for HOV-2. Tolls are perfectly ok.

Wow, that was helpful. Haven't you ever checked to see how Google maps would suggest that you get to a place you go often and thought "Boy, that's not the smartest route?!!" I certainly have had that experience. Google maps contains a wealth of valuable information but it can't compete with someone who is very familiar with an area. That's all the OP is looking for.

Why do you assume she hasn't already done her own research? Asking people who actually drive this on a regular basis is a perfectly valid part of investigating the route. You don't have to bother to answer.

Hello. I would take the Dulles Greenway/Toll Road east to I-66, I-66 east across the Roosevelt Bridge to Constitution Avenue, Constitution Avenue east to Louisiana Avenue, and Louisiana Avenue northeast to Columbus Circle and Union Station. Anticipate 50-90 minutes of travel time depending on traffic and any incidents. The earlier you leave Ashburn the better.

I do a similar trip to Union Station about once per month to take a train to NYC, only I leave from Dulles. Usually I take the toll road - 66 - Constitution Ave - Louisiana ave.

The thing is, I always aim to get to Union Station by 6:00 am since it's only me and I need to avoid the HOV restrictions on 66. I usually leave at around 5:15 and reach the Union Station parking garage around 6:00 am and never encounter any traffic. I suspect after 6:00 things might start getting dicey.

That's what I would have suggested...I might leave before 6 and give yourself time for a breakfast if you don't hit too much traffic.

Thanks all! 45 minutes from Dulles with no traffic gives me a better idea of timing.

I left Ashburn (Broadlands) at 6:30, and was parked at Union Station at 7:20.
