Winchester is one of the fastest growing places in their state. Wash DC is only 70 miles away and a lot of commuters are now
Living there. I like the downtown area. I wish they had a train from there to DC but trains are non existent. Long island to Winchester will be quite a change of scenery I'm sure. It is beautiful there.

I moved from Long Island to NOVA. Lived in Leesburg for a year. It's really more similar than you'd think. It's just like the Long Island suburbs. I drove through Purcelville one day thinking how much it reminded me of West Babylon, Lindenhurst, etc. Seriously, the cost of living, people, demographics, etc. are basically identical.

The cost of living is basically identical?

Not if you own a house....

I was born on Long Island, eventually moved to Buffalo, NY - then moved to Leesburg for my husband's job and now we live in Winchester! Out of everywhere I've lived in my life, Winchester ranks high on the list. Compared to the rest of NoVa the cost of living is much more manageable. Old Town Winchester always has something going on and the restaurants are all great. It's a very family friendly town, that's why we decided to plant our flag here and build a house!

Have you thought about Alexandria, Sterling, or Leesburg?

I'm from New York and in my personal opinion I think almost anywhere in Va. is worth it. It's really a state that has something to offer to anyone, it has city, mountains, beaches, free museums in DC, some really good universities.

I haven't lived in New York since 95, if was still good there at that time but after my deployment ended I actually wound up in Florida before Virginia.

Overall Va. Is pretty kick butt, it's a good state and depending on what region you pick can be absolutely gorgeous.

Congratulations in advance! I lived for a couple of years in Fairfax County, VA and visited Winchester roughly once per month. I grew up in a historic area of Pennsylvania, so I always felt like a fish out of water living in a sea of newer suburban sprawl in Reston. I would trek to Winchester every time I needed to feel a "sense of place" and immediately felt less homesick as I perused the Downtown pedestrian mall. People in Winchester/Frederick County seemed very friendly. You'll definitely enjoy the annual Apple Blossom Festival, too!

You're close to a lot of day-tripping opportunities from Winchester---DC; Old Town Alexandria; Luray Caverns; Skyline Drive; Charlottesville; the Eastern Panhandle of WV (including Harper's Ferry and Shepherdstown); Gettysburg, PA; etc. Before I decided to move out of VA completely to give Pittsburgh a whirl I briefly considered living in Winchester and power-commuting to my office in Tysons Corner. I decided that wasn't feasible, but I wish it had been because I love and miss Winchester so much!

The area is growing moderately, too. I'd predict it will welcome a Wegman's; Trader Joe's; and/or a Whole Foods in about another decade. State College, PA (comparable metro area) has a Trader Joe's now, and Lancaster, PA (city not much larger than Winchester) is getting a Whole Foods. I'd think Wegman's, actually, might have a good shot of making Winchester a reality much sooner than a decade.
