Two townhomes were completely destroyed in a fire late this summer in the McNair Farms community in Herndon.

I drive through that area often and observed that they are still charred and boarded up with no signs of repairs/demolition in progress.

They are starting to become an eye sore and hitting property values on that street.

Anybody have any inside information about what is going on with them?

Could be they are battling it out with the insurance companies because of this "Smoking materials improperly discarded on a deck of a townhome in Herndon..." and that's what could be causing the delay.

If you are a neighbor concerned about your property value, perhaps contact the HOA to find out if they know anything about the status of repairs.

I agree, likely an insurance thing. Know if they were being rented out when the fire occurred? If so (i've seen this before), maybe the owners didn't adjust their insurance policies to reflect the "rental" status, instead of primary residence? I know a guy who made this exact same mistake recently. Due to low interest rates, decided to move further out for a larger single family home. Decided to keep his townhouse in Reston and rent it out. Didn't adjust the insurance policy to reflect this change. First tenant he had, burnt it down while grilling on the deck (caught the vinyl siding above the grill on fire). Insurance company denied his claims for this reason. Took months and a lawyer to get them to adjust the policy coverage and repair the damage. He had to pay the back-pay adjustment to the policy to reflect a "rental" in the agreement, which wasn't cheap (but much cheaper than not having insurance to begin with). Folks who decide to move and rent their old place, make this mistake all the time. Luckily, his insurance company came through for him (most don't).

I currently know two people who are dealing with repairing/ rebuilding after a fire. Dealing with the insurance and contractors takes FOREVER. Both people had fires in the Spring. Only one has even started repairs. The fire you are referencing was in August. I wouldn't expect to see construction work begin until after the winter is over, at least.
