Hi guys,

I just graduated with a M.A. in Educational Psychology and I am really frustrated beyond anything. I sub at public schools which pays only a dime! I thought that after graduation, I will be able to teach community college if not a university. I can't even get a reply from anywhere even for counseling or academic advising positions! Every position requires all this experience in the particular discipline. Teaching elementary, middle or high schools is just too much and very little pay for all the different roles that you must play.

Even adult teaching jobs are hard to get response from. I am in the process of acquiring teaching certification....maybe, that would help.

Plus, in exactly 3 months, my student loans payments will start!!

I am just wondering how do I get my foot in the door at a community college for any position so I can work my way up. Any suggestions would really help. Thank you so much!

Have a great weekend!

Why did you assume this? Is this a field where this happens routinely? I am not in the academic fields, but I would assume it takes a fair amount of experience and usually a doctorate to teach at the collegiate level. What experience do you have? Did you do any student teaching while getting your MA?

What did your student advisor tell you when you were getting your degrees?

Agree with PP. I don't have experience with community colleges but my impression has been a doctoral degree is needed for a full hire plus they use a lot of adjunct positions which do not pay all that well. Confused about getting the teaching certificate when you already mention it doesn't pay well "for all the roles you play".

Since this is your first post, if you are truly serious about info, I suggest you post over on the education board. If you're posting here because you live in NoVa then good luck. You really need to go back to your program and the school's career center and see what they can tell you.
