Assume someone is self employed and needs to stop working due to a pregnancy.
Is there any way of getting benefits in VA?

In order to receive benefits you must be able and available to work during the time receiving the benefits. This does not seem to be the case here, as the pregnancy is preventing availability and capability.

I would recommend looking into independent disability insurance programs.

is independent disability insurance something you purchase, similar to health/auto insurance?

Plus, employers pay unemployment insurance to fund these benefits. Do self-employed people have to do this as well...pay in a portion for unemployment insurance?

If you work for yourself and are set up as a corporation with you as the senior officer, then no, you cannot collect benefits. You have to pay into the pool, but cannot collect. It's a ripoff.

Does pregnancy qualify as a "disability"?

It does with most short-term disability plans. Usually you have to work right up until the end (unless you have a complicated pregnancy, and then you can get time off before delivery) but the actual post-delivery period is deemed disability.

I am self employed when I was pregnant with my second child I could not receive any benefits similar to the Cooperate world where you can claim disability. Only way around for self employed business person is to purchase short term & long term disability insurance. However when I compared the cost of short term insurance it was not worth the money!
