Can anyone provide a comparison of Fairafax (22032) and Falls Church (22043) in regard to homeowner stability, tax rates/flux, crime and schools? We're first time homebuyers relocating from upper NW, DC with a 4-yo who has special needs (speech/occupational therapy/Individualized Education Plan-IEP/kindergarten SY '08).

Also, anyone have insight on the tax rates/flux in No. VA vs. MD?

I'd go with Fairfax 22032...it's more suburban, and 22043 contains Bailey's Crossroads, which has had substantial MS-13 gang activity. That said, both will be just fine for you - I'd just prefer the Fairfax / Woodson / Robinson school districts to anything in 22043.

Northern Virginia tax rates are lower than suburban Maryland, particularly Montgomery County MD. Us NoVA people sometimes ***** about the couple hundred a year we chip in every year towards the car tax, but that's more than balanced out by the increased homeowners property taxes (as well as the increased cost to insure vehicles) in Maryland.

Of course, that's taken into account (and perhaps then some) by the overall higher prices for properties in VA versus MD.

You will find excellent special education programs in either zipcode. FCPS spends a lot of money on programs for students with special needs.

I actually teach in a school that feeds from 22043 and from 22182. I find it to be an excellent school. The kids are very well behaved and respectful - our PTA is very involved -- I love it. It is quite diverse with people coming from all over the world. We have a great preschool program for children with special needs. It is in the Marshall High School pyramid. There are lots of schools in 22043 -- Check the FCPS website, plug in your address, and the school will come up. Then you can look at the school profile.

I currently live in 22043 but am moving to 22031 because we found a good deal on a townhouse. I would be happy in either place, though!
