I'm not disputing that living in Lorton (or certainly Newington) might be a reasonable option for someone working at Belvoir, but an earlier post said Belvoir is "basically in Lorton." Lorton is nearby but not as close as Springfield or (on the Walker Gate side) FFX County Alexandria.
key word "basically". Did I say directly? So there was no point in your Lorton comment. Also fort Belvoir is up the hill from LORTON station.

OK, by that logic it's also "basically" in Washington, DC. I already noted Lorton is still very nearby and probably among several good options for someone who wants to live near the post.

No, it's not the same as saying it's basically in "Washington DC." Lorton to dc is 19 miles and Lorton to fort Belvoir is 4 miles and if you live in Lorton station it's up the freaking hill. So just stop before you say anything else inaccurate.

For the benefit of OP, he or she should know that, as a technical matter, Lorton, Springfield, Alexandria (in Fairfax County), Newington, Burke, etc. are not cities or municipalities. They are all unincorporated sections of Fairfax County that are identified the way they are because of the post office or because of them being places designated by the U.S. Census. As you drive from Lorton to Newington to Springfield, etc., there really is nothing that would let you know you are now entering a different CDP. Additonally, the mailing address will not always match the CDP or the way people refer to it. For example, I live in the Newington CDP, but I believe all residential areas in Newington have a Springfield mailing address, as they are all serviced by the post office located in the Springfield CDP. Before here, I lived in Kingstowne. People who live in Kingstowne always say "I live in Kingstowne" but their mailing addresses are Alexandria.

...You said it's basically in Lorton, which implies that if Belvoir weren't its own mailing address/jurisdiction, it would be Lorton as the nearest municipality--which is not true. Springfield and FFXCounty Alex abut the post and Lorton is on the other side of Newington, end of story. I worked there 2 years and rarely if ever heard anyone even mention Lorton. ...

I agree, but you missed my point which is those houses have a Lorton mailing address. Similar to Kingstowne having a Alexandria mailing address. The real boundries are not as important when you are looking for homes online. When you are searching Zillow etc for homes they will show as a Lorton address. They literally back up to Ft Belvoir, so some could assume that Belvoir is in Lorton.

Thank you, couldn't have said it better myself.

When looking at places to live, I notice property and vehicle taxes seem to be quite a bit higher in Fairfax.

A 20 to 40 min drive I can live with and if I was too live in fairfax county where would the recommended areas to live be where it will take 20-40 mins to get to work?

Thanks
Lorton would be a great location. It is in your price range, is a short commute, and still close to other things (Woodbridge/Kingstowne for shopping, off of 95, as was mentioned has the VRE).

I had a co-worker who lived near the Lorton Town Center and he got to work in 15 minutes on Fort Belvoir.
