Hi,

I recently received an offer from a top consulting firm in the area for a senior consultant position in the technology services specifically in the federal practice. i am m interested in some help in negotiating for a fair salary.

Did brief glassdoor search in va/dc area and it is ~110k +comp/bonus

i do have clearance.

I am extremely excited about this opportunity and I certainly don't want to be overly greedy but don't want to sell myself short either you know so before i call the recruiter back I want to be prepared for some negotiation strategies.

I do know the mean salary is as a mentioned above and I also know that with a clearance like mine it does carry value (some say 6-8k more) but i am not sure how to argue that into my negotiation strategy though. I would like for some help in some scenarios:

1. Probably likely - ~110k

I think this might be their offer since it is the mean. If i am offered this I think i would love either some sign on bonus or little more - should i argue about my clearance?

2. lowball - 100k

This I wouldnt be particularly happy and the obvious counter would be "the mean" but they could just raise it to that level and say "you got what you wanted". What should my approach be here?

3. >110K

I think I might just try ask for some sign on bonus but if they say no i say ok. I think this scenario of above the mean is good..

Thanks in advance for the help.

You received an employment offer. They did not include a salary with the offer?

Do you have top secret clearance? Does the position require a top secret clearance? Anything other than top secret carries no monetary value.

i received offer on voicemail and i emailed back to defer the talk of salary on another day. I do have TS and it is assumed they will utilize it on placement of the projects.

As for tech skillset i am from development background mostly in java and some other skills like html, jscript etc. i do have mba as well. With my experience the title is senior consultant.

They do know how much i am making and that this is the only offer i have ( i wasnt really looking to leave but they contacted me first)

Okay so early on the recruiter probably asked you how much you are currently making. Did they ask what you would like to be making with this move?
The TS is a plus and a good negotiating point if its a requirement for the task order.

The recruiter did ask and i didnt give a specific figure and .she did say they offer competitively... i asked another former employee and she said the company typically dont negotiate on salary but maybe on sign on bonus.. if it comes to that what would be a sign on bonus to ask?

100k isn't that much for this area. Demand your worth!

Just tell them you want $140K. They will come back with their max number if they really want you.

Why don't you wait and see what your salary offer actually is first? Seems silly to develop a negotiation strategy when you don't even know what you are negotiating for yet. If the offer is below what you want you ask for more and be firm about it and prepared to walk. If it's a good offer you ask for a little more anyway and if they don't bite you still have your good offer. Pretty simple.

Yeah but i just want to make sure i have a plan if they ask me on the spot. i will be talking to them tomorrow so i will know a bit more about the situation. if theres a number that makes me say yes right away it is probably 130 - it is above the mean and i would argue about my clearance being a driving factor. i will definitely keep you guys posted tomorrow on the situation.

As for the opportunity itself i feel it is a great one especially given the career choices post consulting as well.
