I live in Prince William County....Woodbridge to be specific. I just got my Notice of Assessment notice for 2015. The tax bill increased by 12.9% over 2014. From $3,668 to $4,142.

I live in a TH and the assessment went up from $300K to $339K. Seems like a lot. Anyone else get an increase like that? In Prince William County? Or any of the surrounding counties?

Thanks!

There are threads on property tax assessments (I posted one about Alex. City) and someone started one about Fairfax County (that one was later and has generated more responses and more input from other areas as well) - prices have gone up!

On the western end of the county (Haymarket), mine says an increase of only .3%. That is based on last year's $1.2212. Since the max it will be for this year is $1.1936, my property taxes will actually decrease this year.

VA doesn't have a Homestead Exemption which limits property tax increases?

No it doesn't, I have had increases of 20-25% some years and 5-10 on others.

Well, if you think your TH is assessed too high, you can call PWC to find out what homes they used to assess the level of increase for your community. They may not be in the actual TH community you live in. When I called about an increase a few years ago, they listed sales that within a mile or two, but not what I would consider comparable homes. Similarly, if you know of some other TH in your community that have sold recently, find out for how much they sold (available on the PWC site as well as many other resources such as Zillow). If $339K is well above selling prices in your area, then feel free to appeal the assessment.

As far as increases go, my assessment went up 4% this year. I am following my own advice in deciding whether or not to appeal. While there are some homes in my area that are for sale at this price (and above), I don't know that they are selling at these levels.

I live in Woodbridge also and just got mine. From 2013 to 2014, I had a 15.5% increase. From 2014 to 2015, only 2.6%.
