O.K., looking at a job opportunity in McLean. We have no knowledge of the area and need advice on where to live. Two small children require good schooling. Property is nice but we understand that this is not a rural area. Would love to keep commute down to under 45 minutes, rail or car. We are looking to keep things under 1.2M for a sfh, under 900K would be even better. Any towns that come to mind that are great commuter towns that fit some of our other parameters? Any advice at all would be helpful. . thanks so much.

Why not Mclean? It's generally where everyone wants to live, has the most desirable schools, and you can afford it (just). Of course, you'll get a lot more for your money in Reston, which I like for it's bike and run trails, or Vienna. You should probably just get a good real estate agent.

Look in McLean. It is generally aesthetically nice, good schools, short proximity to DC, and you should be able to afford a decent house there.

You shouldn't have any trouble in that price range. Vienna is right down the road and has lots of community and good schools. Or try for Mclean proper. Or Great Falls.

You can get property and rural feel in Great Falls and still be in your desired 45 minutes to McLean.

I just did a search maxing at $1.2M 3+Bed/2+Bath and there are 33 properties on more than 1 acre, 19 on more than 2 acres, and 7 on more than 3 acres.

Wow! Just thank you for all of your quick input! That's amazing. Unfortunately, we have just learned that the desk he'll be sitting at wont be in McLean after all but Mt. Olive NJ!! Arrgghhh. . Assuming he takes the job. Thank you so much for all of your quick responses, I feel like I've wasted your time but I'm hoping that someone will find this information very useful

Check out nearby Pimmit Hills and Dunn Loring for newer homes.

A bit far from the Big City, but Mt. Olive is nice. Mountains, woods, and lakes.

Reynard, I am not even kidding when I tell you that this particular job would put his office in Mt. Olive. . . not Mclean as originally thought. .. so strange that you should mention this town specifically. .. maybe it's a sign Going to look around that area. . . Thanks!
