My husband is traveling to Raleigh on Thursday via Amtrak and has a ticket out of Union Station. I said that the trip to Union might be a nightmare due to the papal visit, and recommended he change his starting point. The most convenient place for him to drive would actually be Fredericksburg. From the website, it appears Amtrak has no parking, but the map shows some commuter lots and a garage close by.

Does anyone know if these lots or garage is likely to be full on a Thursday, mid-morning?

I have no idea about how much or how quickly it fills but there is a multi level parking garage between Sohia and Caroline street about two blocks north of the train station. We parked there when we went to NYC and it was only $8/day. The lot by the station I think probably fills with daily VRE people. My guess is the garage is fine.

One word of advice for Fredericksburg Amtrak if you've never used it. There is not an indoor station there and the announcements seemed to be few and far between and electronic signage was nil. We had to wait to figure out which side the train was coming in on so had to scramble to get to the right platform.

I wouldn't get to fritzed out about the papal visit. OPM and the media have done a great job of scaring everyong out of the city. It will probably be the best day ever. I'm going to work!
