I need some advice - thanks in advance for the help!

I live in TN and received a RD-Speeding Ticket (86/70) last weekend travelling through Smyth, VA.

Have a pretty clean record - only one regular speeding ticket about 10 years ago in VA and very minor fender bender in TN about 14 years ago.

What should I do - didn't realize until about 1 hr. ago that this was a misdemeanor leaving a criminal record. I'm very upset right now.

Had been travelling all day between 70 and 78 depending on traffic. Yes, speeding but staying with the flow - none of the other cops had stopped anyone all day - and there were a ton of police out.

Had to maneuver around cars getting on and off at an exit - some drivers weren't paying attention - ended up speeding up way too high. I never normally go that fast. The police were 'hiding/waiting' behind a hill on the entrance ramp - right where I had to get out of the way. As soon as I was out of the way I slowed but down but it was too late. I was polite/courteous to the policewoman.

I don't have to appear in court - can just pay the fine and court cost. Should I do that or is it worth hiring an attorney to appear for me?

Also, how in the world do I go about finding a good attorney in that area?

Sorry for so many questions....

This is in the wrong forum. Smyth isn't in Northern Virginia. Should probably be in whatever subsection of VA forum is pertinent to Smyth, or just in the general VA forum.

In regards to the bolded, you're going to want to hire a lawyer. Reckless driving is no joke and you need someone representing you.

More than likely you'll start getting advertisements from lawyers that work in that county. Hire one. You shouldn't have to appear in court. Most of the time your lawyer can get RD knocked down to just speeding. Be prepared for this all to run you $300 - $400.

Hire a lawyer with an office by the courthouse to represent you.

Definitely stick with the 'police were hiding' defense, though
