I'm thinking of taking the family to NYC this coming weekend since they have never been.

Does anyone know how much the tolls are round trip or a rough idea? I would be coming from Ashburn.

Get an EZPass if you don't already have one.

That way you don't have to worry immediately about the money being collected.

I was in NYC this week for the Little Consumer Electronic Show. You will run into tolls on interstate 95 if you take the hot-lanes north of Baltimore, You will also hit tolls just before the Delaware state line, after the Delaware state line. The Delaware Memorial Bridge, Interstate 95 in New Jersey and whatever entrance way into Manhattan- Holland, Lincoln, Battery Tunnels. George Washington Bridge etc.

I have an EZ Pass account so I really didn't pay attention as to how much I was paying at each toll plaza.

This. But it also depends on what part of NYC. You can get another $10-15 in the city too.

Unless you have free parking in NYC, the toll is less of your worries.

You also get different rates with some EZ Pass systems, though New Jersey only discounts NJ transponders for the Turnpike. A cash toll at a Hudson crossing is $14, but with EZ Pass it is $9.75 at an off-peak hour, and being a multi-jurisdictional agency, the PA NY-NJ discounts for all EZ Pass transactions.

You can also take I-295 in South Jersey for free and avoid the lower NJ Turnpike, rejoining at about Trenton. Avoiding the tolls on a regular day isn't worth it because you will add to the cost of your trip in fuel, since it would take about an hour extra.

If you want to find a parking special, check out: BestParking: NYC Parking Map - Find, Compare, Save 75%, but be aware that many garages are in the stone ages and you actually have to print a coupon or reservation in order to have it honored. You can find some street parking, too, but will be far from tourist attractions, and depending upon hotel, you can pay $50/night.

I make this trip regularly. As noted, you can avoid some of these tolls. Particularly the toll on the MD/DE border as well as some of the NJ Turnpike Tolls. I do not take the Greenway out of Ashburn, but add that toll if you plan to. As noted, disconts for EZ pass exist as well. For a MD EZ pass, you get $1.00 off the Tunnel. Here are the standard EZ pass rates

Entering Dulles Toll Road $1.00
Main Dulles Toll Road Plaza $2.50
Baltimore Tunnel $4.00
95 in Maryland $6.00 (one way only)
95 in DE $4.00
Delaware Bridge $4.00 (one way only)
NJ Turnpike Approx $13 (peak, EZ PAss rate, depends on exit point - how you are getting to NYC).
Hudson River Crossing $11.75 (peak, EZ pass rate - one way only)

This comes to about $71 round trip.

If you are toll adverse, with some reasonable work around can avoid Dulles Toll Road (least worth it), the $4.00 DE toll, and chop about $4 off each way of the turnpike if you take 295 until exit 4 on the turnpike, and a little more if you take it all the way up to exit 7A.

Like others already mentioned, definitely get an EZ Pass if you decide to drive to NYC. You not only save a bit of $, but more importantly time, as you do not have to stop and wait at each toll point.
