Doesn't mean I don't roll my eyes at it. But among the group I work in, folks just use first names--even the ones in uniform. When I started, though, it was kind of a culture adjustment.

Doc <insert first or last name>, I've used both interchangeably in all kinds of settings. One was a former SIL, the current is a current neighbor. They spent a long time in school and earned it. To me, it is an informal term of endearment.

Same here. My 30 years in the PD saw everyone calling Sgt's and above by their titles while on duty. Even off duty I still referred to the higher ranks by their titles when I saw them. Just something that happened naturally. When I entered the work force as a contractor, and now full time, I was surprised at how informal everyone is. Both at State Dept and my current agency.
