If you don't want a lot of airport noise from overhead aircraft, then I would head west to Purcellville, Hamilton area or Middleburg. However Middleburg is quite pricey and further away from a lot of things. South riding, Centreville, Herndon, Sterling, Chantilly all have aircraft departure and arrival routes overhead.
Good luck with your move, it is a decent area around here west of Rt 28

Not sure what you consider a short commute but you can get everything you want in the Gainesville/Haymarket area except the three car garage for well under your budget if you are willing to have a 20-30 minute commute.

30 minute commute ONLY if he works completely off-hours. Otherwise the commute would be closer to 45-50 minutes.

My original post got deleted by the moderator, 'cuz I was 'too forward.' Here's what I know as an experienced professional, who's lived here in No.VA since 1971: You'll be fine. You will find numerous home-choices that meet your criteria. While you may have to sacrifice one or two items on your list, then again--you may not. Herndon, Reston, Ashburn, Leesburg, Chantilly, South Riding, Aldie/Haymarket.......ALL of those areas will have properties meeting your 'druthers.' Each will also have it's commuting challenges, but that's difficult--if not impossible--to avoid in this area.

From most of Haymarket, without traffic, about 35 minutes. With traffic, as you said, about 45. However, OP, if you don't find something closer and are willing to have a slightly longer commute, Haymarket has a lot of new construction that is very nice and is in your price range. It's also a very pretty area.

Idk about those commute times but maybe you are right. Personally I leave my house at 550 and get to work in Herndon in 30-35 minutes and my commute home is 35-40 when I leave at 3pm. At those times the commute to Dulles is at least 10 minutes less.

Reston is a great place but with your max $700,000 budget . . .

. . .you will have to sacrifice:
-new construction
-3 car garage

. . . you will most likely have to sacrifice:
-no less than 3500 sq. ft.

You defiantly can get!
-wooded backyard
-family friendly area (we have two small children)
-quality, well built home is very important
-community pool
-charming details inside and out
-within walking distance to a great elementary school would be ideal

Here is an updated home that has been on the market long enough that I'm sure you can get if for $700K or less. It has a wooded backyard and is a short walk to the elementary school and community pool.
