Wondering if anyone has an idea of where to donate new carpet in the Sterling area? I recently closed on a house and the new carpet that had been installed was not to my liking. So when having new flooring put down I ensured that all of the carpet was cut and left in full pieces (room size) to ensure that it would not go to waste. I had assumed that as the carpet was new that Habitat for Humanity would gladly accept it for their restore. I was wrong. So know I have 4 bedrooms of cut carpet rolled up in my garage (plus hallway and stairs).

Any ideas??

I really would prefer not to simply have it hauled to the dump because the carpet is new and it would be so wasteful.

Craigslist, newspaper ad, ask coworkers, friends, family, etc.

Check with a local humane society to see if they'll take the carpet. They'll cut it into smaller pieces to line the cages or living areas. Maybe recover scratching posts?

Otherwise I'd just throw it up on Craigslist free or freecycle. The problem is that the carpet is already cut and only good for rooms smaller than the cut pieces. Someone would have to measure all the pieces, like the color/style, arrange shipping...not really worth it vs. getting your own carpet (I'd imagine the reason habitat won't take it).

Roll up carpet. Set atop station wagon. Tie loosely. Get onto Beltway at 3AM. Nail it!

Problem solved.

OK, but seriously--there's some place in MD that recycles home-building materials. They might take it.

OP, I've put things out on the curb (on a good weather day) with a sign that says "free--please take" and items were gone in less than an hour. If you wanted to, you could post a notice with the location on Craig's List before putting the carpet on the curb.

One other idea--you could let a nearby Realtor know about the carpet. They typically know lots of handy people who may have a use for it, or may own rental property themselves. They could take the remnants to a carpet store and get the edges finished for use as area rugs.

I agree with trying to give away on CL/Freecycle.
