Congrats on your decision to relocate to Northern Virginia!

I agree - I think Falls Church will be a nice fit for you. (Most areas inside the beltway are pretty progressive.) It's a nice community. Something to keep in mind for the future when you buy is that Falls Church City taxes are higher than Falls Church (Fairfax County). The Fairfax County one surrounds the city. Sometimes it's just a matter of going a block further to save a considerable amount of money. (VA is weird with its incorporated cities and counties.)

Also check out Annandale and the Vienna/Fairfax area.

Best of luck to you!

Without getting into anything about more liberal areas than others, the key in your post, imho, is your desire for a short commute. If you're working in FC, and don't want longer than a 15-min commute, I would suggest you focus your home-search on FC, or very nearby. And there are good choices, almost always, in homes there, that would likely fit your budget nicely! Some really cool homes, too!! Glad to answer any other ?'s, and please feel free to DM me, too.....good luck!
