As someone who works a union job, a well run Union doesn't cause the massive problems that the metro suffers... I don't know the state of the union there (pun intended) but I'm pretty confident the leadership and management has been crap to put it politely and caused much more damage than the union. Frivolous abolishing of unions only diminishes the values of modest jobs and empowers management. I wouldn't want in a million years empower leadership as incompetent as the folks at WMATA

Personally, I hope that the impact of a long term shutdown would help the local governments and METRO haters realize how essential this flawed system is and take the necessary steps to fix it. The NYC subway went through something like this decades ago and made it through with a better financed and safe system.
