I'll be getting a place in Alexandria soon. I'm trying to situate myself a) close to Metro (I'm partially disabled so I need to be real close) and b) better locations to drive to both Anacostia & Bethesda/Carderock. I'm trying to stay flexible without making it a terrible commute if I have to drive there every day.

My main question is, if I get a place closer to 495 in Alexandria, would that commute on 495 be terrible?

I can get something closer to the GW parkway, as far as I know driving from there to Bethesda/Carderock is not bad, but driving through Old Town to get there would probably not make it worthwhile.
I think either location will work as far as access to 295/Anacostia.
Metro might work to Anacostia (Yellow to Green & then a bus ride) but probably not worth it for Carderock, since it would take too long.

495 is iffy but if you are closer to GW, that makes it somewhat reasonable. You are also potentially close to King St./Braddock metro stops.

On some days the commute will be easy, and on other days you will go nuts wondering why no one is moving. You will have option of using GW Parkway up to the bridge instead of 495. Living near Tysons and the Silver Line would seem better to me, but that's me.

Look at Crystal City. It's still easy to get over to GW Parkway but you'll be north of Old Town, and still not far from Anacostia, plus close to Metro.

Why Alexandria? My favorite town but not to commute to Bethesda. That said, some large complexes have shuttles to the Metro station.
How about College Park MD. More central to your locations
