My 12 year old daughter wants to set up a lemonade stand this summer in our residential area. I have heard of several cases around the country where the local authorities crack down on small "businesses" like this as they don't have a permit, hand washing station, etc. However, in 2014 there was a news story about a lemonade stand in Loudoun County (it was robbed) and no mention of anyone giving a hoot about a permit. Hmm. I'm wondering if I should just risk it and see it what happens? What do you all think? It's sad I even have to ask this question.. =/

Unless your daughter plans to gross over $10,000, she won't need a business license.

I don't know about a health permit. Perhaps the county considers lemonade stands like it would consider temporary food outlets at carnivals and fairs. You can call 703-FAIRFAX to find out. You can also risk it and see what happens. I can't imagine that anyone would give you grief over a lemonade stand that was set up in front of your house over a weekend or two.

If I remember correctly, the boy you referenced being attacked was actually in Fairfax.

I would definitely call the county too see if any permits are needed, an involve your daughter in the process.

Even if it turns out that nothing is needed, it's a good (small) lesson about going through proper channels and the types of steps that are involved in starting a business. Heck, you might even encourage her to make the call.

but I would bet that you wouldn't be too happy of the tenants at the boarding house across the street sold tacos out of their front yard.......one of the best options for a kid too young to work is to mow lawns...I did it when I was 9.
