Hi,

We have just came from India. My husbands job is in Sterling. We are planning to rent a apartment in ashburn as the schools there seems to be good. My daugther is in grade 4.

But as per our search, it seems that most asian population is in rosa lee carter school. As there is only one apt under rosa lee carter school that too does have only one apt vacant.( which we didnt like much)

The second option we are planning is Hillside elementry school. Does the apt under this school boundry have indians around.

Pls suggest which school and apt should we look so that we get a good school and indians around so that my kids dont feel so out of country.

Also, i see all shopping shops like walmarts and malls in sterling, where gen ashburn people go for grocery and shopping.

pls guide . need advise asap.

thanks in advance.

Welcome to Virginia!

Sorry I can't help on schools and apartments. For groceries you should go to Wegman's in Sterling. Fabulous store - I live in Reston and do all my grocery shopping at Wegman's in Sterling.

This website may help you find information in Loudoun schools.

Loudoun County Public Schools / Overview

Instead of an apartment have you considered renting a townhouse. Check out the rental section of the multiple listing service.

Anecdotal, but in my experience most folks in Ashburn shop at Harris Teeter. There's one at practically every shopping center in Ashburn.

You'll need to check out the 'School Profile' link under most of the school webpages. The school profile will have demographic information, including ethnicity, though not as far down as Indian (instead categorizing as 'Asian'). For example, Hillside Elementary School is 17% Asian.

If you choose Hillside, there is an apartment complex (Luxury Townhouses & Apartments For Rent in Ashburn VA | Broadlands Apartments) just a few blocks away. They have single flat apartments and 3 level townhouses for rent. The school bus picks up and drops off at the entrance of the complex. Hillside is not a bad school, I sent my son there for kindergarten.

Legacy Elementary school in Brambleton is a whopping 32% Asian (the average in the entire county is about 20%) and Creighton's Corner has 40%. I know of several people who live in that section of Brambleton and there are a lot of Indian students.

There is a drop down on that page to access the same information from other schools in LCPS.

For groceries, particularly of the Indian persuasion, I recommend the Korean grocers, Global Food (Ashburn Farm Village Center, 43761 Parkhurst Plaza, Ashburn, VA 20147) or Lotte Plaza (Ashburn Town Square, 43930 Farmwell Hunt Plaza #100, Ashburn, VA 20147). You will probably find their selection of ethnic food to be better than Walmart or Wegmans (and cheaper too).

Both Brambleton and Broadlands (the sections of Ashburn I mentioned) run very close to the Greenway so access to 28 to Sterling is very fast, but very expensive (maybe $6 per trip now), and the surface roads are traffic heavy (Farmwell Road / Waxpool Road).

If you work in Sterling, live in Sterling.

Welcome to US.

In Ashburn, you wouldn't find many Indians living in apartments, they mostly live in Townhomes/Single family homes. You may also consider renting a townhome which usually go for $2,200 to $2,500 rent per month.

Have you considered Herndon and Fairfax county schools? There are several apartments in Herndon (near Clock tower Centerville Rd and Sunrise valley Dr intersection). School like Floris and McNair Elementary schools are good.

McNair ES - Asian population is 61%.
FCPS - School Profiles - McNair ES - Demographics

Floris ES - Asian population is 58%

And you have many Indian grocery stores/restaurants near by. It's also not far from Sterling.

If you wanted to be around Indians then you should have stayed in India. You are in America now. Get used to being around Americans.

Since when did common sense equate to bigotry and xenophobia?
