So unfortunately i was pulled over for speeding...it was ffx county police. It was an area where the speed dropped from 50 to 40 for a half mile. Regardless, my fault i was still going about 62. So overall 22 MPH over the speed limit. Fortunately, the cop was nice and gave me a general speeding ticket instead of reckless speeding. I'm actually moving out of state in August and have an otherwise clean driving record.

Should i just pay it or does it make sense to hire a lawyer to try and see what they can do---i'm not sure if there would be an affect on insurance or anything else? I know i will accrue points on my license, but if i'm leaving the state...i'm not sure that matters?

Any help would be greatly appreciated...also yes---i will slow down!

I would not waste my money hiring an attorney for something like this but if you can afford one then go ahead. I can't say with certainty that your insurance will not be affected but I know people who've received moving violations and their insurance did not go up. I'm talking about one ticket not multiple over time.

Since it's just a speeding ticket and you had a clean record prior to that, just pay it and consider yourself lucky that you weren't charged with Reckless Driving. As far as your insurance goes, it depends on who your insurance company is, but I highly doubt one speeding ticket on your record would have any effect. I got nailed last August doing 68/55. I was in the middle of a stupid argument with somebody that was riding with me and I got distracted as I coming down on a hill and by the time I realized I was speeding and started to slow down, a state trooper nailed me. I also had a clean record. She charged me with a moving violation. I payed it and my insurance didn't care about it when I told them about my ticket. They just said to not let it happen again, otherwise it would go up. I haven't been pulled over since.

Why would you tell your insurance company about your ticket?

They would've found out about it sooner or later anyway, so I figured "Why BS?". Plus, I'm moving to NC soon and when I get my driver's license changed, the ticket will show up at NCDMV and the insurance company down there will know about it.

Lawyer. Anything that puts "points" on your record, are like little unwanted gifts that keep on giving (your insurance premiums). I've never known anyone who didn't say "I should've gotten a lawyer" long after they just decided to pay the ticket and move on. With your clean record, the ability to reduce the penalty into a non-moving violation to keep points off the record, at the expense of an increased cash fine, is highly probable. You won't miss that extra $300 nearly as much as you're going to miss not spending it two years later when you're still paying for those points.

And you're 100% correct, insurance would've found out about it.

I'm skeptical that any increase in insurance premiums would end up costing more money than hiring an attorney for the mere chance of getting the violation reduced to something with no points. Personally, I'd pay it and move on.

Unless you think they will really punish you for it in your new state of residence, I'd just pay it & move on. You even admit it was your fault - unless you think it's likely that a lawyer can wiggle out of it I'd just move on...
