I am a white mid-20's young professional gay male and have a choice between Northern VA or Norfolk/Virginia Beach VA. I like a vibrant nightlife, and reliable transportation. Which areas is there a vibrant young gay population that is low-crime? And what are the pros and cons of the two areas?

All the gay guys I know live in Maryland or DC even if they commute to work in Fairfax. I think Virginia lagging on gay rights led most to settle in locations where their rights are more assured. I don't know about Virginia Beach though.

This one is easy. Northern VA. I grew up in Hampton Roads and have been in NoVA for ten years. Northern VA is FAR ahead of Hampton Roads when it comes to gay acceptance.

Agreed.

OP - your best bet would be NoVa without a question.

Also, from a career and growth perspective, NoVa is the better bet as well.

Also, from a low-crime perspective, no one is going to use the words Hampton Roads and low crime in the same sentence, particularly Norfolk which would be the most likely city to have a decent gay population.
