In any case, the OP said they work west of 28 and 50. So I'd hope you agree that worst case in the thick of rush hour, they could still make it from Haymarket to there in about 40 minutes or so by going up route 15 and then east on 50 (or taking back roads that are too difficult to explain). 1 hour at 6 in the morning is is a nice round number, but not accurate.
I lived there from 1973 to 2015. Just moved out here.

So, you drive to Alexandria, which means I assume you aren't driving up 15 an heading west on 50. If you were you would know that, in the "thick of rush hour" it will take approx 35-45 minutes to go from 15 to 28 on 50. No way you are doing Haymarket to Chantilly on this route "in the thick of rush hour".

And 50 is a lot worse heading home....

You do realize they widened 50 correct? It doesn't take that long to get from 15 to 28 on 50. In addition, from Haymarket you would actually take several back roads such as sudley to get there.

But anyways, the best thing for the OP to do is either do the commute, or at a minimum, check out what google maps says at the time they would be commuting. Google maps traffic is pretty accurate.

Yes, I am very aware that they widened Rt 50. Are you aware they have added hundreds of houses and continue to do so?? This would be my normal commute, if it wasn't so awful; so I choose to pay for the Greenway. I still do it occasionally (like this morning) to pick up/ drop off dry cleaning in Chantilly. Again, I was reminded how painful it was. And I wasn't doing it "in the thick of rush hour". I can't imagine how bad it would be then.

As mentioned before, you commute to Alexandria, so I am not so sure you are familiar with the rush-hour Rt 50 commute.

Oh, and good luck with the back roads....no one has thought of those.

Time to put this one to rest. See the screenshot from google maps at just after 5 pm today. Starting about where the OP said, west of 28/50 and to Haymarket. All would be slightly less at 4 pm. Via I-66 is 35 minutes, up 50 to 15 is 36 minutes, and the back way 34 minutes. Pretty hard to argue with, but I'm sure someone will find a way!
