Having never lit a fire in my house (and the current house has two fireplaces), I have never used a chimney sweep.

But the Chimney Safety Institute of America offers a list of companies/ people..

And they also offer tips on what to look for.

Used chimney doctors about once every three years. Besides cleaning, they " recommend" possible needed repairs but only accepted putting a cable operated cover which helps keep the draft down which helps in both winter and summer. Long lead times which is expected for any quality business in the NOVA area.

How are their rates?

Scheduling time frame?

How do you know if you need a chimney sweep?

I believe they have a flat rate, $80 maybe? That includes inspection and cleaning. Originally it was a recently purchased house and figured an initial inspection and cleaning would be good. The chimney crown ( above the roof) was cracked and needed repair which could only be done on a separate trip. Lead time was 2 to 3 weeks so if a chimney inspection was part of a " home inspection", may not work. Otherwise 2-3 weeks seems reasonable since chimneys are usually not urgent items.
