Hi All,

I am a young professional and I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good place in Northern Virginia to get my individual taxes done.

I ask as last year I went to H&R Block and was less then happy with the results.

I am open to any suggestions!

Thank you in advance!

Do you have difficult taxes? If not, I recommend that you just do them yourself with one of the tax prep programs. Unless you have a very complicated financial picture, the online programs work well and, depending on your income, they may be free.

Mine could be somewhat difficult as I've received payment for work done via 1099 which can be tricky taxwise.

I should have mentioned that in my orginal post* :/

Oh, that's nothing. TurboTax or HR Block Online will specifically ask if you have that situation and walk you through. If you make under $55K, HRBlock online will be free to use and file. TurboTax is free at the $32K mark, I believe. They actually all have free versions on line but will charge your for e file if your income is over a certain amount.

My parents use TurboTax. They are retired yet my mother is also a 1099 worker in her retirement. They have no problems. Your taxes are probably very easy to do.

If you don't own property and are taking the standard deductions your taxes take about ten minutes to do.

Second trying one of the online programs.

Amen X 1000. I *kick* myself for all the years we used a CPA. This year I paid $16 (filing included, state return included) via FreeTax USA! And we itemize! Previously I used TurboTax and TaxAct, but both have raised prices.

I echo the others, just do them yourself. I am 100% 1099, my husband is W-2 and we own our home - we still do our own, very simple.

1099s can get complicated when youre trying to do deductions and figure out what you can deduct, etc.

Had my most complicated return ever this year because of so many deductions and sources of income, in addition to working in DC but paying VA taxes. Nauseating.

My wife works in DC; it doesn't matter where the money is earned as long as you live here. The tax software is good about asking you for info on deductions; e.g., it knows that you can only deduct medical expenses if they go over I believe 10% of AGI and that student-loan interest deductability disappears over a certain income.

The only time I could see a CPA making sense is if you own rental property and/or live out of state part of the year. Or have a lot of odd investments. And even then, most tax software in the deluxe editions covers all those things.

It even covers rare deductions for things like making a film in VA or income as a Medal of Honor recipient.
