I know of one poster here who lives in Lake Ridge, VA, and commutes to the Navy Yard, which of course is just up the road from the NRL. She leaves early in the morning and seems to find it OK. No idea what rents are like down there. Also near there is Montclair. And then a bit closer (as others noted) Burke and Springfield.

Look up the rankings on US News, they're nearly identical in ranking (both state specific and nationally)
While many Montgomery County schools could hold their own with Fairfax, given that it's at NRL, then it's a moot point, since the MoCo commute would be terrible.

As someone else said, you need to probably look comparatively at Prince George's, which is substantially worse.

Based on where your husband is working, and your specifications, I recommend looking at Burke and West Springfield in Fairfax County (22015, 22152). Both are conveniently located in the metropolitan area, feature well-established suburban neighborhoods with strong schools and plenty of amenities, and are very popular with families. As a previous poster said, your husband's commute would be, on average, about 25-45 minutes to the NRL. Some days would be better than others; however, given that some people commute two hours each way here, it wouldn't be that bad.
