Hi
We are looking for a rescue puppy to adopt.(Puppies, months old)
FCAS says they rarely get any puppies yet could not recommend any local legit charitable groups.

I've been scanning petfinder . com but I am worried the 'shelters' are all sketchy

Can anyone recommend a wonderful, local rescue group that is truly rescue?
We'd like a mutt but will considered pure breds

Thanks

We got a dog at Middleburg Humane. They never know what's coming in but you could probably get on a waiting list.

Also know some good people involved with Homeward Trails.

Best of luck.

Got a wonderful dog from the pound a few years ago. It was 18 months old so not a puppy but it came pre-trained. The benefit of not having to do puppy stages was well worth it. If that makes me old then I'm old.

Try the Humane Rescue League in DC. They occasionally have puppies - I used to watch their puppy cam when they were the Washington Animal Rescue League.

They currently have a 4 month old puppy up for adoption.

I thought puppies (and kittens) should be 6 mos. old before being adopted?

Puppies and kittens need to be at least 8 weeks (2 months) old before leaving their mother or litter mates. Most good breeders keep them a little longer, but 8 weeks is acceptable. Most puppies in a shelter or rescue are (obviously) not from good breeders, but from "whoopsie" owners or homeless dogs.

If a shelter or rescue is offering dogs under 8 weeks; they are not reputable.

I foster cats for Homeward Trails and volunteers are very dedicated. HT currently shows quite a few "baby" dogs on their site.

Kittens are adoptable ~ 10 weeks of age. I'm sure the dog volunteers can tell you the minimum age to adopt puppies.

The Reston Now website has a sponsored post each week by a local pet care service featuring a shelter animal waiting to be adopted. The last two featured were from Safe Haven Puppy Rescue.

If I weren't a cat person, I think I would have adopted this one myself. God, what a cutie!

If you're more into Shepherd-type puppies, this was last week's featured adoptee:

If you end up with one of these two, let us know (I volunteer to be the godfather).

Good luck.
