We are considering a move to the DC area. My husband would commute to Manassas. We have a middle-schooler and a high-schooler who attend Catholic schools where we live now. That's not a requirement if we move to an area with good public schools, which we know NOVA has (I grew up in Bethesda).

The problem, of course, is the cost of housing. We're moving from Memphis, where we live in a 16 year old, 2,300 sq. ft., 3br/2ba house. We could probably afford to buy in the $250-300k range in DC.

What communities do you all suggest we look at? Which Catholic schools?

The Seton School is a great independent Catholic school in Manassas. Seton School - Manassas VA Home Page Completely solid, orthodox program. They might not have any slots left, however. Tuition is extremely low by DC area standards. And you could easily buy a nice house in or near Manassas, which would give your husband a very short commute.
There is a brand new Catholic high school, John Paul II the Great, opening in Dumfries this fall. Pope John Paul the Great Home Page I don't know very much about this area, but the housing costs are more reasonable than Fairfax County.

I second those schools. I *think* there is also a really good school called All Saints in Manassas, but I'm not sure. I remember someone saying the principal was very orthodox. Overall this diocese is wonderful compared to the rest of the country. Good luck

Bristow and Gainsville are nice family areas that offer a close commute to Manassas. The Linton Hall School Linton Hall School is right next to the Braemar community.

Linton Hall School and All Saints School go up to 8th grade.

I have heard wonderful things about Seton, I know a few families with children there, and they are very devout, very nice families . I have heard that for Seton, you pretty much have to enroll in seventh grade, or it will be next to impossible to get in later.

I also know of Holy Family Academy, on the website it says it goes up to grade 12. Holy Family Academy
The families I know with students there are in the younger grades though, so I haven't heard how they are for high school years.
