As ffxdata suggested, arborvitae are a good option—evergreen gives you privacy and color all year, and there’s little maintenance and leaf drop. Hollies dump lots of leaves and a white insect targets them. If you want an ornamental shade tree Japanese Maples are exquisite and relatively small.

When we lived in NoVa we had a Willow Oak planted in the front yard that eventually grew big and beautiful with shade. What was nice about it was it has small thin leaves, like a willow tree leaf but it was an oak so when the leaves fell in the fall it wasn’t so hard to clean up.

Also decide based on fall color too...

We have one huge tree in our backyard, its so beautiful and gives lot of shade.

But in fall, its an eye sore..... doesn't have fall color. Leaves turn brown and fall, no orange/red/yellow colors.

After so many posts, I probably go with Black Tupelo and Littleleaf Linden. But I am also looking for small trees too.
