New York Times is just reporting that it's Crystal City and Long Island City in Queens.

Assuming it's both Long Island City and Crystal City, I'll be interested in how Amazon ultimately characterizes this choice.

- LIC as the "HQ2" and CC as a major satellite operation?
- CC as the "HQ2" and LIC as a major satellite operation?
- LIC and CC as major satellites of Seattle?
- 300 other possibilities I'm not thinking of...?

Obviously, it will depend in part on which operations go where and how many people are employed at each location...

Exactly. And this now should suppress concerns about the inability of one jurisdiction to absorb all the extra workers. 25k jobs is still a TON of jobs!

They were probably always going to those two locations because of the latency issue with order fulfillment for federal procurement (DC), data center support (DC/NY), and trading execution (NY) as well as the regulatory agencies in both cities (DC and NY FRB).

Because of the locations, effect on housing and rents may be muted.

In the end, it came down to the financial center and the trading software expertise being in NYC and the government contracts and lobbying being in DC. I expect this company will eventually split up into the more profitable businesses that it's positioning for in government services, finance, IT facilities management, and healthcare IT.

Amazon used the contest to collect intelligence on future developments in the cities in which it was likely to expand regional operations.

LOL well if I had my way, they'd split the HQ between Crystal City and Reston/Herndon. 25K jobs for both sites! That would have been awesome.

I'd caution from popping the bubbly just yet. Amazon has not confirmed anything here. Still speculative in nature, with the property owner for Crystal City still in a pursuit posture for it and others in general. Until Amazon confirms, the tail is waging the dog here, wrong side of the teeth that can still bite.

Yup just a month ago it looked almost certain like it was going to the Dulles area.

Crystal City makes a lot of sense if you're going to go after the federal procurement portal with a 1-hour delivery promise. You either go to the Pentagon or the 14th Street Bridge to Federal Triangle and Capitol Hill.
