I am being transferred to DC for work. I have been looking at homes in Alexandria and Arlington, but with a family & big dogs, doesn't look like it will work. Any suggestions on where to look that has decent schools, homes in the $300s, where the commute will not kill me?

Depends on what living options you are willing to consider. A single-family home in the 300s will be next to impossible to find anywhere within about 45 minutes of DC (this is during non rush hour periods), unless it is in a rather rough area with horrible schools. Townhomes are within your price range but you still won't be able to live close to the city, which will result in a VERY long commute. I would maybe rent for a year, try various commutes and then possibly decide to buy, the market isn't likely to improve anytime soon!

Thanks! I know that a SFH isn't realistic at this point. We have been looking at townhomes. My work provides $$ for public transportation, so I have been looking in areas along the VRE. Any idea how long it takes to get into DC via VRE from around the Woodbridge area?

Woodbridge/Lake Ridge/Montclair are very nice areas that you might consider. It is very pretty down there. Good luck!

Woodbridge is nice, but it will be a hellish commute.

You might also take a look at Herndon and Sterling area, or Centreville. Still a bad commute but not as bad.

i'd also say Lake Ridge/Woodbridge area, if you're set on VA. There are many sfh's for 300k and below. There are also commuting options using the VRE trains and hov lanes as well. It's a tough commute but doable. Have you considered MD (i.e., rockville, silver spring)? Those areas are a much easier to commute into the city than from woodbridge and there are plenty of older homes in your price range in good school districts there (montgomery county). good luck!

*If* your office is near a VRE station, then I would rent in Burke (near VRE station and not a long commute downtown). You don't want to rush into a real estate decision in this area.

There are quite a bit of commuting options from the Woodbridge area which can help shorten your commute. You can go to the SLUGG-Line commuter lots (there are many around the Woodbridge area), HOV, VRE, Van Pool, and Express Commuter Buses. Home prices vary throughout the Woodbridge area and depending on the size/neighborhood the $300ks are quite doable.
