Totally depends on the efficiency of the HVAC units and the house and the temperature preferences and bathing preferences of the people.

I have a home of this size where me, my wife and infant son live in Arlington.

Our electric runs anywhere from $100 to $250 depending on the time of year. Last month it was $175, but it was $250 during that one month this summer when every day was above 90 degrees.

Gas is only $50 during the spring, summer, and fall months, but can rise to as high as $150 during the winter.

Water + trash + sewer is only $90/month (it’s billed quarterly, so a quarter is usually $250). My lot is only 5,500 SF and I don’t water my lawn. Some of my friends that live near me have bills that are $750 to $1,000 per quarter, but they water their lawns. I take 2 showers per day and hand wash dishes because the dishwasher is broken.

FYI, I keep the thermostat at 72 degrees when I’m home during the warm months and 68 during the cold months. When we’re not home, it is set to 80 degrees in the warm months and 60 during the cold months. Our HVAC is from 2001 and is dual zoned meaning I can have the upstairs A/C or heat on, and leave the downstairs off.

It also depends on how well insulated the house is. Many 1940s etc brick colonials have almost none.

Water and sewer bills will depend on which county you choose. Arlington, for example, really puts it to people who water their lawns and gardens, because sewer rates are calculated per water gallon used even though outdoor watering doesn’t use sewers as do toilets, showers, etc. You can get a separate meter for outdoor usage, but the County charges an enormous amount to install this. They rationalize this practice by saying they want to encourage conservation, but Fairfax and other counties use a fairer system (as have other places I have lived).

If you live in an apartment or condo, depending on the windows and energy efficiency, heating and cooling are MUCH cheaper than in SFHs.
