Her job is in DC. They are trying to split the diff but cannot believe to travel time and rent in Eastern Ffx County or s arlington.
We have the top 3 richest counties in the nation. I still dont understand how the terrifying costs in DC Metro are a surprise to anyone frankly

Yes, I get her job is in DC. But that could be Capitol Hill, upper NW, our near Silver Spring. All of these areas have very different commuting possibilities. But his job is in Chantilly/ Sterling and has very few commuting options other than driving. So, it would make sense (based on their budget) to live as close as possible to (a) his work location and (b) public transportation options for her. South Arlington doesn't fit these requirements and is expensive, to boot.

"They" are not working in Chantilly. One of them is. The other is working in DC. In the spirit of his request I'm offering him factual information on housing options, not my personal opinions on how they should arrange their entire lives. Why not leave all that up to them? They're adults, correct? Many people prefer to be closer to the city for a variety of reasons but I will leave that up to the OP.

Perhaps, after the Metro is extended, and your company has a shuttle; but I would not count on that. If your wife will be working in downtown DC, public transportation is definitely the way to do. The cost is based on how far you go, and it can get expensive, but many (probably most) companies (and all federal agencies) provide a transit subsidy benefit. The other option is driving and parking, which is equally (if not more) as expensive. Do you know where in DC she will be?
Her location would be somewhere on Pennsylvania Avenue.

Penn crosses a District and at least one Maryland county. Its over 35 miles long What is she close to? It may determine if you live in Maryland as best

thats basically center DC

You could live in Maryland; PG County or Montgomery County

You could live in DC

Or FFX Virginia.

You should head over to the MARYLAND;Washington DC suburbs forum and check out who works plus commutes in Loudoun County. Im positive many Dulles/DC working families there (Dulles is the neighborhood name of part of Sterling VA) That might be an excellent option for both of you

Would Maryland be cheaper? REALLY trying to avoid Maryland and DC its self. Those are LAST resorts. But will look at it IF the cost savings is considerable compared to Northern VA.

Its a nuanced debate. I feel MD is cheaper but taxes are higher

Also, IMO MARC transir is the best in the Metro, superior to mwata, vre and amtrak

Then its a wash then. Id rather do VA.

1) Closer to family that already live there (Springfield and Woodbridge)
2) Way better Second Amendment laws.
