Has anyone here used someone local to install a trailer hitch and electric brake controller? I'd like to install both on my Subaru Forester. Thanks!

U-Haul in Falls Church (near the W&OD Bridge crossing Rt. 7) to install two hitches, one on a Forester btw. I’d call and ask if they have experience with the electric brake controller and also check their online reviews.

Taylor Boyz in Warrenton. Worth the drive. Honest, reasonable. Been working with them for 10 years.

Thanks for the recommendations! I ended up finding a place close to my office in Sterling which appears reputable and reasonably priced. If I'm happy with their work, I'll share ... thanks!

Hmm...take time to ask for recommendations and then ignore them and go with someone you find yourself that "appears reputable". ok.

If you're towing a trailer that has electric brakes, you may be over your vehicle's limits.

The Forester is not the vehicle to tow such heavy trailers.

Thanks for your question (and luv4horses, too). I understand your concern.

I know that the state requires brakes for towing 3000 lbs. I'd be recklessly negligent to tow that much with my Forester!

The Forester's manual states that the maximum weight that can be towed by the Forester is under 1500 lbs. If over 1000 lbs, the Subaru documentation requires that that the trailer be towed with brakes.

I plan on towing something that should weigh a little over 1000 lbs. Hence the desire for a brake controller. It's nowhere near the the limit required by the state of VA, but I'm taking Subaru's stated requirement into account when planning to tow safely and responsibly.

Based on some other recommendations (is that okay with you, spencgr? Just checkin'), I might wait until I weigh the trailer and payload to make sure it's over the 1000 lbs before spending money on getting the brake controller installed.

Of course you can do whatever you want. Just wondering why you would waste your time asking for a recommendation, if you were just going to select your own place?
